Day 1; prison justice means what?

Saturday, March 8, 2014; 11:31pm
Sitting in the kitchen of the church we’re staying in, copying my Sociology term notes into a study guide on my laptop and watching some new friends play Spoons, Kemps, and other card games, I’m already starting to feel at home here. I’ve set my alarm for 6:45am because we’re getting up early to take showers, move our sleeping gear, and set up the church for the members’ service in the morning. The trip leaders told us we’d be boarding another bus around 9am to take a tour of the prison and a couple cemeteries. This is only the first night, but already we’re getting to know one another through question beach balls and conversation cards. My first reflection group time consisted of us remembering names and discussing what social justice really means. This trip is essentially about prison justice, but when people would ask me leading up to leaving for Texas, “what does that mean?” I didn’t know how to answer them. One of my hopes, by the end of the week, is to explain to each person who asks me that question what exactly prison justice looks like. This is something completely new to me and I’m excited to be a part of this experience.
